Born Arthur G. TUFFS on 16th March 1916 in Lakenheath (Mildenhall Q2-1916 4A:1822), son of John and Amy Jane TUFFS (née COLEMAN).
In the 1939 register, a farm worker, he was at Willow Farm (Downham Rural District -Watlington area ?) with his father John [2-8-1886]; mother Amy J [2-5-1889] brothers Thomas C [3-11-1921], Sidney J [9-6-1922] and Frank [21-3-1930 (an invalid); sister Margaret A (later Mrs POPE) [17-8-1919]. All the men were farm workers. There are 2 closed records. He married Lucy Doris Marjorie GIDDINS in 1940 (registered Wisbech), of Friday Bridge, Cambridgeshire. |

This was the 3rd battalions first action since leaving the beaches at Dunkirk. The Axis forces were actually pushing the Allies back in Tunisia at the time.
This was just before the Battle of Kasserine Pass which turned the whole campaign in the Allies favour.
It is likely that George was killed during the withdrawal of the Battalion together with the 1st Parachute Regiment from Djebel Mansour south west of Tunis. The 3rd Grenadiers had 14 men killed on the 5th February 1943. He was initially buried in Bou Arad Military Cemetery 7:M:14, but moved to Medjez-el-Bab on 17th July 1944 |
